Cheagle

Cheagle

INTRODUCTION

The Cheagle is a mongrel dog, a cross between the Chihuahua and Beagle dog breeds. Compact, energetic and loyal, these puppies inherit some of the best qualities of their two parents. Cheagles go by various names, such as Beagle Chi, Chi-Bea, Beagle-Chihuahua mix, and Chibeagle. Despite their unfortunate status as a designer breed, you can find these mixed breed dogs, along with every other type of dog, in shelters and rescues. So remember to adopt. These adorable pups are a great addition to the family for active singles or families with older children. If you are looking for an energetic, fun-loving puppy, this may be your soul mate.

HIGHLIGHTS

The Cheagle is a mixed breed dog. They are not pure breeds like their Chihuahua or Beagle parents. Cheagles are prone to weight gain if they are overfed. Follow a proper diet and feeding schedule. The main colors of Cheagles are combinations of brown, black, white and cream. Sometimes their coat is solid, but usually it is a combination of colors. Breeders began intentionally mixing Chihuahuas and Beagles to create Cheagles in the late 1990s. Cheagles have a lot of energy and prefer an active play session to being a lap dog. Cheagles tend to bark frequently, which makes them good watchdogs. However, early training can help curb unwanted barking tendencies. Because Cheagles tend to be small, they can be easily injured by children playing roughly. They may prefer homes with older children or children who have been taught to handle small animals.

HISTORY

The Cheagle dog breed may have existed naturally over the years, but designer breeders began intentionally mixing Chihuahuas and Beagles in the late 1990s, probably in North America. Although the Cheagle breed began as a designer breed, some have ended up in shelters or in the care of rescue groups. Consider adoption if you decide this is the breed for you. Check local shelters, look for Cheagle rescues, or check with breed-specific Beagle or Chihuahua rescues, as they sometimes accept mixed-breed dogs.
